Rachel pressed the notifier and heard the house announcing her to its residents. She hated hearing her cyborg moniker, but that was always the first thing to pop on her identification.

Peyton eventually answered her summons and looked more massive than usual standing in the doorway of his home. He was not smiling in welcome, but he nodded politely. After a few seconds, he pushed the door wide and waited for her to cross his threshold.

Releasing a ragged breath as having passed the first hurdle, Rachel stepped inside. Entering was just the beginning of several scary things she intended to make herself do today. Talking to Kyra was always a bit intimidating, but convincing the cyber scientist to do what she wanted? Well, that was another matter altogether.

It didn’t help level her nerves to know that Marcus treated Kyra like his mother. Anything and everything she was doing would go straight back to him. Coming up with a suitable reason to convince Marcus she needed to chase Kyra down—and to do it alone—had exhausted most of her bravery before she even got there.

Peyton strolled down his hallway. “Marcus let me know you were coming. Kyra’s in her lab. All I can get from her is an irritated statement that she’s fine. I can’t promise she’ll talk to you.”

Rachel lifted a shoulder. “I’ll take my chances. This is about something Nero left for her. She and I have to talk about it. I owe it to Nero.”

“Good luck then,” Peyton said as he stopped in front of a large metal door and pressed his hand against its security plate. When prompted for eye recognition, he punched in a command instead, one that caused the panel to announce override acceptance.

The heavy door clicked as lights flashed over the top of it. A couple seconds later it swung open. A fully functional cyborg conversion lab was inside. Her stomach fell to her feet. The urge to run was nearly irresistible. How many people had these in their homes?

“I’ll give you two some privacy. The door will close after you enter so you won’t be able to leave without being let out. I’m working in the kitchen if you need to see me when you leave.”

“I understand. Thank you,” Rachel said. She meant her reply to be reassuring, but it came out timid and unsure. She’d learned long ago that it was damn hard to radiate confidence when your knees were quaking.

The security at Kyra’s home lab was tighter than what the scientist insisted on at Norton. Eye scans for a home lab? Really? She wondered if Marcus had set this up. Her cyborg partner in life wasn’t much for talking about his work. Peyton’s cybernetic eyes couldn’t pass the retinal test, but as far she knew, he was the only person on Kyra’s inner circle that required an override.

Telling herself not to be such a coward, Rachel entered the lab and tried not to stare. The setup here looked like something out of a vid instead of real life.
